A powerful magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck parts of Mindanao at 10:32 p.m. on Saturday, October 11, 2025, shaking homes and buildings across several provinces and cities in the region.
According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the quake’s epicenter was located 28 kilometers north and 86 degrees east of Cagwait, Surigao del Sur. It originated from a tectonic source at a depth of 24 kilometers.
The tremor was strongly felt (Intensity IV) in Cagwait and Carmen, Surigao del Sur, as well as in the cities of Cagayan de Oro, Davao, and Butuan. Residents described the shaking as strong but brief, causing some to leave their homes in fear of aftershocks.
Intensity III was reported in parts of Southern Leyte, Bukidnon, Bislig City, and Mati City, while Intensity II tremors reached Leyte, Samar, and Surigao del Norte.
Instrumental readings also recorded Intensity IV shaking in Tandag City, Cabadbaran, and Nabunturan, and Intensity III in areas such as Digos City, Surigao City, and Gingoog City.
PHIVOLCS confirmed that the earthquake was tectonic in origin, meaning it was caused by the movement of underground rock layers. The agency warned that aftershocks are expected and that minor damage in affected areas is possible.
Local disaster offices have been placed on alert to monitor reports of damage or landslides, especially in Surigao del Sur and neighboring provinces.
As of 11:09 p.m., no tsunami alert has been raised, but authorities urged residents to stay cautious and rely only on official updates from PHIVOLCS and local government units.
