Super Typhoon Nando, known internationally as Ragasa, has made its way across the Babuyan Islands, making landfall over Panuitan Island in Calayan, Cagayan. The weather bureau, PAGASA, reported at 5:00 PM today, September 22, 2025, that the super typhoon is now moving away from the island group.
At its peak, Nando packed maximum sustained winds of 215 km/h near its center, with powerful gusts reaching up to 295 km/h. It made landfall at approximately 3:00 PM and is currently moving westward at 25 km/h. The sheer force of the typhoon is vast, with strong to typhoon-force winds extending up to 650 km from its center.
Despite its movement away from the Babuyan Islands, a number of areas remain under various Tropical Cyclone Wind Signals (TCWS). TCWS No. 5, indicating an extreme threat to life and property from typhoon-force winds, remains in effect for the Babuyan Islands. Meanwhile, TCWS No. 4, with its significant to severe threat, covers parts of Batanes, mainland Cagayan, and Ilocos Norte.
Residents in areas under lower wind signals are also advised to remain vigilant. TCWS No. 3 is active for the rest of Batanes, central Cagayan, parts of Apayao, and the rest of Ilocos Norte, warning of storm-force winds. The list of areas under TCWS No. 2 and No. 1 is extensive, covering much of Northern and Central Luzon, urging people to prepare for gale-force to strong winds.
Aside from the fierce winds, the typhoon's effects are far-reaching. The public is advised to refer to the latest weather advisories for updates on heavy rainfall, which is expected due to the super typhoon and the ongoing Southwest Monsoon.
Mariners are also strongly advised to stay in port. A Gale Warning is in effect over the seaboards of Northern Luzon, with sea travel deemed risky for all types of vessels due to waves reaching up to 14 meters. There is also a high risk of a life-threatening storm surge, with peak heights possibly exceeding 3.0 meters in the coastal areas of Batanes, Cagayan, and Ilocos provinces.
PAGASA forecasts that Nando will exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by tomorrow morning. While the super typhoon is currently at its peak intensity, it is expected to begin weakening over the West Philippine Sea.
Local government units and disaster risk reduction and management offices are urged to take all necessary precautions to protect their constituents. Residents in high-risk areas should follow all evacuation and safety instructions from local authorities.
