BICOL REGION — Super Typhoon “Uwan” continues to unleash its fury over the Bicol Region as it maintains its strength while barreling west-northwest at 30 kilometers per hour. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) warns of life-threatening winds, heavy rainfall, and dangerous storm surges across Luzon and parts of the Visayas.
As of 10 a.m., the center of Uwan’s eye was located over the coastal waters of Pandan, Catanduanes with maximum sustained winds of 185 km/h and gusts reaching 230 km/h. Strong to typhoon-force winds extend outward up to 800 kilometers from the center, covering a massive portion of the country.
Widespread Alerts Raised
PAGASA has placed several provinces under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signals (TCWS) as Uwan nears peak intensity:
Signal No. 5 — Catanduanes, northern Camarines Norte, eastern Camarines Sur, Polillo Islands, and parts of Aurora are under extreme threat to life and property due to typhoon-force winds exceeding 185 km/h.
• Signal No. 4 — Widespread areas across Quezon, Aurora, Nueva Ecija, Camarines provinces, and parts of Albay may experience severe wind damage and heavy rainfall.
• Signal No. 3 — Metro Manila, Cavite, Batangas, Laguna, Rizal, Bataan, Zambales, and much of Northern Luzon are bracing for storm-force winds.
• Signal No. 2 and No. 1 — Other parts of Luzon, Visayas, and northern Mindanao are also expected to experience strong to gale-force winds in the next 24 to 36 hours.
Heavy Rains and Storm Surges
PAGASA warned that torrential rainfall could trigger widespread flooding and landslides, especially in mountainous and low-lying areas. Coastal communities are on high alert as storm surges may exceed 3 meters, posing a serious threat to life and property in provinces like Cagayan, Quezon, Aurora, Zambales, Bataan, Metro Manila, Camarines Sur, Albay, and Catanduanes.
Sea Travel Suspended
A Gale Warning remains in effect over the seaboards of Luzon, Visayas, and parts of Mindanao. Sea conditions are extremely dangerous, with waves reaching up to 14 meters in some eastern seaboards. PAGASA has strongly advised all mariners and fishermen to stay in port and avoid sea travel until conditions improve.
Expected Path
According to PAGASA’s forecast, Uwan will continue moving west-northwest and is expected to make landfall over the central portion of Aurora tonight or early Sunday. The typhoon may remain at or near super typhoon intensity during landfall.
After crossing Northern Luzon’s rugged terrain, Uwan is projected to weaken slightly before emerging over the Lingayen Gulf or La Union coast by Sunday morning. By early next week, the system is expected to curve northward toward Taiwan, where it could make landfall by Thursday, November 13.
Public Urged to Heed Evacuation Orders
Authorities have urged residents in flood-prone and coastal areas to evacuate immediately as conditions are expected to worsen. Disaster response teams across Bicol, Central Luzon, and Metro Manila are on high alert.
PAGASA reminded the public not to focus solely on the storm’s track, emphasizing that severe weather, storm surge, and destructive winds extend far from the center.
“Persons living in areas identified to be highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards are advised to follow evacuation and other instructions from local officials,” PAGASA said.
The next official bulletin will be released at 2:00 PM today.
