Liberal Party President Atty. Erin Tañada on Wednesday called on the Senate to respect the public’s call for transparency and accountability by proceeding with the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.
“Ituloy ang paglilitis!” was the resounding message delivered during a protest action staged near the Senate gates, where Tañada joined civil society groups urging senators to wait for the Supreme Court’s ruling on the House of Representatives’ motion for reconsideration before making any move to dismiss the case.
“The Filipino people deserve the truth,” Tañada said in a statement. “They deserve the chance to hear the allegations, see the evidence, and allow the Vice President to respond to them in a full and fair trial.”
His remarks echoed the sentiment of many who gathered outside the Senate, braving intermittent rain and tightened security measures. Protesters decried what they saw as attempts to sidestep due process and suppress public scrutiny.
Among them was feminist scholar and activist Dr. Sylvia Claudio, who posted updates from the scene: “Just finished our rally at the Senate gates urging the continuation of the impeachment trial of VP Duterte… At least the heavens are on our side.” Claudio also criticized what she described as Senate efforts to stifle dissent, citing the confiscation of their stage and denial of gallery access for some rallyists.
She warned that protests would continue if the Senate moves to shut down the process altogether. “If the case is dismissed, join me for protest either tonight or tomorrow,” she posted, inviting concerned citizens to remain vigilant and ready to mobilize.
The call for the continuation of the trial comes amid growing public scrutiny and legal challenges to the Vice President’s conduct, which remain under seal pending formal proceedings.
As debates intensify both inside and outside the halls of Congress, protesters and opposition figures alike continue to emphasize that accountability should not be compromised for political convenience—and that the search for truth must not be prematurely silenced.
