Filipino athletes took a break from their final training sessions on Monday to witness the Philippine flag rise in Thailand—an important tradition signaling the country’s official participation in the 33rd Southeast Asian Games.

The ceremony set an upbeat tone just a day before the Games officially open Tuesday evening under heightened security. Thai authorities have locked down the main venue ahead of the arrival of members of the Royal Thai family, who are expected at the opening rites.

This year marks a historic moment for Team Philippines. The country is fielding its largest-ever SEA Games delegation, with over 1,500 Filipino athletes competing across venues in Bangkok and Chonburi from December 9 to 20, 2025. The 33rd edition is also the first SEA Games since 2023, when Cambodia served as host.

Official entries list the Philippines with 1,168 competitors, though the overall delegation is significantly larger. Thailand leads all participating nations with 1,531 athletes, followed by Myanmar with 1,477. Cambodia, meanwhile, arrives with a notably small group of just 84 athletes.

Team Philippines is eyeing a stronger performance this year, hoping to improve on its 2023 medal haul: 58 gold, 86 silver, and 116 bronze medals—good for fifth place overall.

Several Filipino stars are set to headline the country’s campaign, including weightlifting Olympic champion Hidilyn Diaz-Naranjo, tennis standout Alexandra Eala, and world-class pole vaulter EJ Obiena, all expected to boost the Philippines’ bid for a higher finish.

With the Games now underway, the Filipino contingent enters competition energized—motivated by the flag-raising ceremony, the record-sized delegation, and the chance to bring pride to the country on the regional stage.
