BASILAN — What was first feared to be a siege in Tipo-Tipo, Basilan has now been clarified by authorities as a rido-related clash, or a local clan feud — not a large-scale attack or armed incursion.
The 101st Infantry Brigade (Three Red Arrows) confirmed in an official statement that the ongoing tension stemmed from a localized conflict between local parties, emphasizing that military presence in the area is to maintain peace and protect civilians.
“The presence of our troops is part of our mandate to preserve peace, maintain order, and uphold the rule of law,” said Brigadier General Frederick M. Sales, commander of the 101st Brigade.
“Our forces are closely coordinating with the Philippine National Police, local government units, and community leaders to prevent further escalation and ensure civilian safety.”
Local Government Appeals for Calm
Earlier, Tipo-Tipo Mayor Ingatun G. Istarul issued a public statement confirming a stand-off between both sides while peace negotiations were ongoing.
“We are in close coordination with concerned government agencies to ensure the safety of our people here in Tipo-Tipo,” the mayor said.
“Let us remain calm, avoid spreading unverified information, and trust that through proper dialogue, we can reach a peaceful resolution.”
Mayor Istarul also suspended classes, government work, and economic activities in the town to prioritize public safety.
Coordinated Peace Efforts Underway
The Provincial Government of Basilan, together with the Basilan Council of Elders, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), and law enforcement agencies, are now working hand in hand to de-escalate tensions and restore normalcy.
The military appealed to the public to continue supporting the peace process that has long brought stability to Basilan, warning that isolated violence must not undo years of cooperation and dialogue.
“We urge everyone to remain calm and continue supporting the peace process,” BGen. Sales added.
“The 101st Brigade remains steadfast in its commitment to sustain peace and stability in Basilan.”
A Call for Unity and Prayer
As negotiations continue, the people of Tipo-Tipo remain hopeful that the standoff will soon be peacefully resolved. Both the local government and the military have called for unity, patience, and continued prayers for lasting peace in Basilan.
