Timor-Leste Joins ASEAN Family As 11th Member

Timor-Leste has officially joined the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), becoming the organization’s 11th member after years of preparation and engagement.
The milestone was marked during the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where regional leaders gathered for the formal signing of the Declaration on the Admission of Timor-Leste into ASEAN.
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. was among the ASEAN leaders who witnessed the ceremony, hosted by Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
This year’s summit carried the theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability,” reflecting ASEAN’s commitment to building a more united and resilient region.
For Timor-Leste, the move signifies not only a diplomatic achievement but also a major step toward deeper economic, political, and cultural integration with its Southeast Asian neighbors.
Leaders across the region hailed the development as a sign of ASEAN’s continued growth and inclusivity — welcoming Timor-Leste into what many called its “regional family.”
