Tropical Depression Huaning has slightly strengthened as it continues to move slowly north-northwestward, according to the latest advisory from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
As of 10:00 a.m. today, August 18, the weather disturbance was estimated at 535 kilometers east-northeast of Itbayat, Batanes. It now packs maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour near the center, gustiness reaching up to 70 kilometers per hour, and a central pressure of 1008 hPa. Its circulation extends strong winds outward up to 270 kilometers from the center.
Despite its intensification, PAGASA clarified that no Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal is currently in effect, and Huaning is not expected to directly affect the country throughout the forecast period. Likewise, sea conditions in Philippine coastal waters will remain generally safe, with only up to moderate seas expected in some areas.
The tropical depression is forecast to move generally northward and leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) either tonight or by tomorrow morning, August 19. On its projected path, Huaning may pass close to or over the Okinawa Islands by tomorrow morning or afternoon. While intensification into a tropical storm cannot be completely ruled out, PAGASA said the system will most likely remain a tropical depression until it exits PAR.
Authorities are reminding disaster risk reduction and management offices, as well as communities in hazard-prone areas, to remain alert and prepared. The public is also advised to monitor official weather bulletins and localized warnings, including advisories on heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, through their respective PAGASA Regional Services Divisions.
