Tropical Depression 'Isang' Makes Landfall In Aurora; Brings Rains And Strong Winds Across Luzon
Tropical Depression Isang has officially entered the country’s weather scene, making landfall over Casiguran, Aurora this Friday morning, August 22. The system, which developed from a low pressure area east of Aurora, is now moving westward and expected to traverse Northern Luzon before exiting toward the West Philippine Sea by tomorrow.
As of 10:00 a.m., the center of Isang was spotted in Casiguran, Aurora, packing maximum sustained winds of 55 km/h and gusts reaching up to 90 km/h. Strong winds extend outward up to 200 kilometers from its center, signaling that its effects will be felt well beyond its immediate path.
PAGASA has raised Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 in several parts of Luzon, including Cagayan, Isabela, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, Apayao, Kalinga, Abra, Mountain Province, Benguet, Ilocos Region, La Union, Pangasinan, Aurora, and the northern portion of Nueva Ecija. Areas under this warning may experience minimal to minor damage from strong winds, particularly in exposed and elevated locations.
But winds aren’t the only concern. Isang is enhancing the southwest monsoon, which means strong to gale-force gusts will also sweep across many parts of Luzon, Metro Manila, and the Visayas today and in the coming days. PAGASA has cautioned residents in coastal and mountainous areas to brace for more intense conditions.
At sea, moderate to rough waters are expected, especially along the seaboards of Northern Luzon. Small boats and motorbancas are advised to avoid venturing out, while larger vessels are urged to take precautionary measures.
Looking ahead, PAGASA forecasts that Isang will continue moving westward, crossing Northern Luzon within the next 12 hours before emerging into the West Philippine Sea tonight. It is likely to strengthen into a tropical storm by tomorrow, with a chance of further intensification as it tracks toward the waters south of Hainan, China.
Authorities remind the public to remain vigilant. Local governments and disaster management offices are on alert, urging residents in flood- and landslide-prone areas to heed evacuation advisories when issued. For more localized weather updates, communities are encouraged to closely monitor advisories from their regional PAGASA offices.
