Tropical Storm 'Co-May' And Typhoon 'Krosa' Stay Outside PAR, But Monsoon Rains Bring Heavy Downpour To Luzon

As of 8:00 AM today, July 28, 2025, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) continues to monitor two weather systems located outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR): Tropical Storm "Co-May" (formerly “Emong”) and Typhoon “Krosa.” While these systems remain far from direct land interaction, their presence is enhancing the Southwest Monsoon, or Habagat, bringing significant rainfall to parts of Luzon.

From today through noon tomorrow, rainfall amounts ranging from 50 to 100 millimeters are expected in several provinces: Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Abra, Benguet, Zambales, and Bataan. Residents in mountainous and elevated areas should remain especially vigilant, as localized rainfall may be more intense and runoff from previous rains may heighten the risk of landslides and flash floods.

The public, particularly those in high-risk areas, is urged to stay alert and coordinate with local disaster risk reduction and management offices. PAGASA’s Regional Services Divisions may issue Heavy Rainfall Warnings and Thunderstorm Advisories as needed, depending on evolving conditions in their respective regions.

It is important to understand the distinction between the advisories issued. Heavy Rainfall Warnings are more immediate in nature, covering the next three hours and applying to specific municipalities. These use Doppler radar data and are vital for short-term, localized decisions such as class suspensions and emergency responses. Weather Advisories, on the other hand, cover a broader provincial area over a 24-hour period and are useful for general planning, though less precise.
