Authorities have issued a tsunami advisory for several provinces in the Philippines after a powerful magnitude 8.7 earthquake struck off the east coast of Kamchatka, Russia at 7:25 a.m. on July 30, 2025.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS), tsunami wave models from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center indicate that coastal areas facing the Pacific Ocean may experience minor sea-level disturbances. While the expected wave height is below one meter, officials are urging vigilance, especially in communities near the shoreline.

The first tsunami waves are expected to reach the Philippine coastline between 1:20 p.m. and 2:40 p.m. (PST). However, authorities warn that these initial waves may not be the largest and could be followed by additional waves over several hours.

In response, DOST-PHIVOLCS has recommended precautionary measures, including keeping away from beaches and coastal waters in at least 22 provinces. These include the Batanes Group of Islands, Isabela, Cagayan, Aurora, Quezon, Catanduanes, Camarines Norte and Sur, Albay, Sorsogon, Northern and Eastern Samar, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte and Sur, Davao del Norte, Davao Oriental, Davao Occidental, Davao del Sur, and Davao de Oro.

Residents living near the shoreline in these areas are strongly advised to move farther inland as a preventive safety measure. Meanwhile, owners of boats docked in harbors, estuaries, and shallow coastal areas are urged to secure their vessels and move them away from the waterfront. Boats already at sea should remain offshore in deeper waters until further notice.

Local Government Units (LGUs) have been directed to activate their emergency operations centers and incident management teams. They are also expected to implement evacuation routes, establish safe zones, and coordinate closely with regional and national disaster agencies.

Officials emphasize that this is a precautionary advisory. No immediate signs of a destructive tsunami have been observed, but preparedness remains crucial. The public is reminded to rely only on verified information from DOST-PHIVOLCS through its official website and social media channels.
