The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS) has officially cancelled its tsunami advisory issued earlier today, July 30, 2025, following a powerful magnitude 8.7 earthquake off the East Coast of Kamchatka, Russia.

The quake, which struck at 7:25 AM Philippine Standard Time, was recorded at a depth of 74 kilometers and located at coordinates 52.2°N, 160.0°E. In response, PHIVOLCS issued a tsunami advisory as a precaution for coastal communities in over 20 provinces across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao that face the Philippine Sea.

The advisory was directed at the following areas:
Batanes Group of Islands, Cagayan, Isabela, Aurora, Quezon, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Albay, Sorsogon, Catanduanes, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Southern Leyte, Leyte, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Davao Oriental, Davao de Oro, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, and Davao Occidental.

However, after close monitoring of sea level data from various stations along the eastern seaboard, PHIVOLCS confirmed that no significant sea level disturbances or destructive tsunami waves were recorded in the hours following the quake.

“With the passing of any possible minor sea level disturbances and in the absence of unusual wave activity, the tsunami advisory is now lifted,” the agency announced.

PHIVOLCS emphasized that this will be the final tsunami information related to this event. Coastal communities are advised to remain vigilant but can resume normal activities with no further concern related to this earthquake.
