MINNEAPOLIS — Two children were killed and 17 others injured Wednesday morning when a gunman opened fire during a back-to-school mass at the Church of the Annunciation in southwest Minneapolis, officials said.
Police identified the suspected shooter as 23-year-old Robin Westman, who they believe acted alone. Authorities said Westman used three legally purchased firearms in the attack and died by suicide at the scene. Investigators have executed multiple search warrants at the church and other locations, recovering additional weapons. A motive has not been determined. Police confirmed that a manifesto believed to be linked to the suspect was taken down by law enforcement.
Among the victims are 14 children between the ages of 6 and 15 and three adult parishioners. Seven victims remain in serious condition, according to hospital officials.
The attack occurred at about 8:30 a.m. inside the chapel where children and parishioners had gathered for Mass. The Church of the Annunciation complex also houses a Catholic school.
Faith leaders and public officials expressed sorrow and called for prayers. Pope Leo XIV offered condolences in a message to Archbishop Bernard Hebda of Minneapolis, commending the souls of the deceased and praying for the injured. Governor Tim Walz and President Donald Trump also issued statements, pledging support and ongoing updates.
Vigils are planned across the city Wednesday evening. The Minneapolis Foundation has set up a fund to support affected families; donations can be made by texting ACF1 to 41444.
Police said the city had seen 12 other shootings in the previous 12 hours, resulting in three deaths and eight injuries, calling the spike in violence “deeply disturbing.”
