Two LPAs And Easterlies Bring Rain To Parts Of The Philippines

Two low pressure areas (LPAs) are currently hovering near the country, and they’re stirring up some unstable weather, especially in the Visayas and Mindanao.

As of 3:00 PM today, May 6, one LPA was spotted around 190 kilometers east northeast of Borongan City, Eastern Samar, while another one was located about 415 kilometers west of Abucay, Bataan. Meanwhile, easterlies—those warm, moist winds coming from the Pacific—are affecting the rest of the country.

Where it’s raining:

• Eastern Visayas and Caraga can expect cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms due to the LPA. Don’t be surprised if the rain gets a bit heavy—there’s a risk of flash floods or landslides, especially in low-lying or mountainous areas.

• Over in the Davao Region, the easterlies are bringing similar conditions: cloudy skies, scattered rains, and occasional thunderstorms. Again, stay alert for possible flooding or landslides.

• For Metro Manila and the rest of the country, it’s mostly partly cloudy to cloudy, but don’t let your guard down—isolated rain showers or thunderstorms are still possible, especially in the afternoon or evening.

Winds and sea conditions:

• Extreme Northern Luzon is seeing light to moderate winds coming from the northwest to southwest. Coastal waters? Slight to moderate waves (around 0.6 to 1.5 meters).

• Over the eastern section of the Visayas, winds are also light to moderate, coming from the northeast to northwest, with similar wave heights.

• The rest of the country will experience light to moderate winds too, with directions ranging from southwest to southeast and calmer seas, between 0.6 to 1.0 meters.

Bottom line: If you’re in the Visayas or Mindanao, best to keep your umbrella and raincoat handy and watch out for weather advisories. For the rest of us—stay cool, but be ready for a sudden downpour.
