Two members of the New People’s Army (NPA) were killed in an encounter with troops from the 78th Infantry (Warrior) Battalion of the Philippine Army on Wednesday, August 27, in Barangay San Jose, Mapanas, Northern Samar.
According to military reports, the soldiers were conducting operations in the area when they engaged a group of armed rebels. A brief exchange of gunfire ensued before the remaining insurgents withdrew from the scene.
Recovered from the encounter site were several high-powered firearms and other equipment believed to belong to the rebels. The Philippine Army has since launched clearing operations to secure the area and ensure the safety of residents.
The military also urged remaining NPA members to surrender and return to the fold of the law, assuring them of government programs aimed at helping former rebels reintegrate into society
