On the sidelines of high-level regional meetings in Kuala Lumpur, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. is expected to visit Washington in a few days.
Rubio made the announcement on July 10, speaking to reporters after participating in both the ASEAN Regional Forum Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and the trilateral U.S.-Philippines-Japan foreign ministers’ dialogue.
“The trilateral meeting was excellent,” Rubio said. “We have a great relationship with Japan and the Philippines, and work very closely with them on the economic corridor, on maritime security, and territorial integrity. We continue to build upon that partnership, and look forward to hosting the president of the Philippines in Washington in a few days.”
The anticipated visit comes at a time of deepening cooperation between Washington, Manila, and Tokyo, particularly in response to regional security challenges and efforts to strengthen economic ties. The three countries have stepped up joint initiatives aimed at enhancing maritime security and protecting territorial sovereignty amid rising tensions in the Indo-Pacific.
While no specific date for the visit was mentioned, Rubio’s remarks signal that preparations for the Philippine president’s trip are already underway and underscore the Biden administration’s commitment to its alliances in the region.
President Marcos’ upcoming visit is expected to further solidify the Philippines’ role as a key U.S. partner in Southeast Asia, while advancing trilateral projects agreed upon during earlier summits. Observers are watching closely to see what new agreements or initiatives may emerge from his meetings in Washington.
