The University of the Philippines community is in mourning after the sudden passing of one of its newest men’s basketball recruits, Israel Osamudiame Friday. The 19-year-old athlete from Abuja, Nigeria collapsed during team practice last Tuesday and, despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, could not be revived.
Friday, who would have turned 20 on September 6, had recently transferred from Centro Escolar University, where he was a standout for the Scorpions in the Universities and Colleges Athletic League. Known for his imposing 6-foot-10 presence in the paint, he was expected to bolster the Fighting Maroons’ frontcourt as they prepared for the upcoming UAAP season.
In a statement, UP expressed its deep sorrow over the loss and assured that the university is in close contact with Friday’s family, providing full support during this difficult time. The school also appealed for respect and privacy for his loved ones as they grieve.
The cause of Friday’s death has yet to be determined. For now, teammates, coaches, and the UP community remember him not only for his athletic promise, but also for the warmth and determination he brought with him on and off the court.
