'We Have A Pope!' - Meet Leo XIV, The New Leader Of The Catholic Church

“Peace be with all of you!”

With those heartfelt words, the world just met its new spiritual leader—Pope Leo XIV. The name might be new to many, but his journey to the papacy has been decades in the making.

In a scene that always stirs the soul, the crowds in St. Peter’s Square erupted in joy as Cardinal Dominique Mamberti stepped onto the balcony and delivered the time-honored announcement:

“Habemus Papam!”—We have a Pope!

And with that, Robert Francis Cardinal Prevost, a Chicago-born Augustinian friar, officially became the 267th Bishop of Rome and successor to Saint Peter.

An American Pope, A Missionary Heart

Pope Leo XIV isn’t just another historic name on the list of popes—he’s bringing with him a rich mix of cultures, experience, and missionary zeal. Born in 1955 in Chicago to a family of French, Italian, and Spanish roots, Leo XIV is only the second pope from the Americas (after Pope Francis) and the first from the United States.

But more than geography, what sets him apart is his deep connection to the Order of Saint Augustine—he’s the first Augustinian pope ever.

His path to the papacy was not your typical Vatican trajectory. After studying math and philosophy at Villanova University, he joined the Augustinian order and went on to earn his doctorate in Canon Law in Rome. Then came a life-changing assignment: Peru.

Years in Peru Shaped a Humble Shepherd

From small towns to poor suburbs, Pope Leo XIV spent over a decade serving as a missionary in northern Peru. He wasn’t just a priest—he was a teacher, parish administrator, canon law expert, and even a judge in the local Church courts. He served in dusty villages and packed seminary classrooms, always with humility and commitment to those in need.

That deep pastoral experience would become the backbone of his leadership.

From Augustinian Leader to Vatican Insider

In 1999, he was elected Provincial Prior of the Augustinians in Chicago, and soon after, Prior General of the worldwide order. By 2014, he found himself back in Peru—this time as a bishop, appointed directly by Pope Francis. He later led the Diocese of Chiclayo and was known for being approachable, spiritual, and a tireless advocate for education and social outreach.

Eventually, his talents caught the Vatican’s eye. He was brought to Rome in 2023 to head the powerful Dicastery for Bishops, helping the Pope select new bishops around the world. And in 2024, he was named a Cardinal.
Now, in 2025, that same humble friar from Chicago has taken up the shoes of the fisherman.

Why Pope Leo XIV?

The name Leo might ring a bell—it's associated with strength, clarity, and wisdom in papal history. Think Leo the Great, who confronted Attila the Hun, or Leo XIII, a champion of social teaching. Pope Leo XIV may be signaling that he hopes to follow in their bold footsteps, guided by wisdom and compassion.

His episcopal motto, "In Illo uno unum" (“In the One, we are one”)—from Saint Augustine himself—gives a clue to his vision: unity through Christ, especially in a Church navigating deep global challenges and transitions.

What's Next?

For now, all eyes are on Rome. The Church is stepping into a new chapter under Leo XIV—an American-born, Latin America-rooted, Augustinian pope with a missionary’s heart and a scholar’s mind.

As he waved to the cheering faithful from the Loggia of Blessings above St. Peter’s Square, Pope Leo XIV began his papacy not with grand pronouncements but with the simple words that echo through time:

“Peace be with all of you.”
