Work From Paradise? PH Now Offers Digital Nomad Visas Under Marcos' New Order

If you’ve ever dreamed of taking Zoom calls by the beach or working on your laptop with a view of the Chocolate Hills, that dream might be a little closer to reality—especially for remote workers from around the world.

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has just signed Executive Order No. 86, officially launching the Digital Nomad Visa (DNV) program in the Philippines. The goal? Attract foreign remote workers to temporarily live, work, and—of course—spend in the country, boosting both tourism and the economy.

So, who exactly is a digital nomad? Think freelancers, tech professionals, or creatives who rely on laptops, good WiFi, and a strong cup of coffee to do their jobs—regardless of location. They work remotely while hopping from one beautiful destination to another. And with the Philippines’ scenic islands, vibrant culture, and low cost of living, it’s no surprise we’re becoming a top choice.

In fact, the World Economic Forum (WEF) already ranked the Philippines as the 7th fastest-growing remote work hub in 2023—and the government clearly wants to keep that momentum going.
Here’s what you need to know about the new DNV:

• Issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), the visa is open to non-immigrant foreigners who work remotely for employers or clients based outside the Philippines.

• Applicants must be at least 18 years old, have a clean criminal record, and proof of remote work and income.

• They must also have health insurance, come from a country that offers similar visas to Filipinos, and not be employed by a Philippine company.

• The visa allows them to stay in the Philippines for up to one year, with the option to renew and multiple entry privileges.

To make this work, the DFA will work closely with the DOJ, DOT, Bureau of Immigration, and BIR to set clear guidelines. They’ve been given 30 days from the EO’s effectivity to get everything in place. The DFA will also keep a secure database of all DNV holders to ensure compliance with data privacy laws.

This move is seen as part of a broader push to modernize the Philippines’ visa system and tap into the global trend of flexible, remote work.

So, who knows? The next time you’re on a beach in Siargao or sipping coffee in Baguio, don’t be surprised if your tablemate is a digital nomad crunching code—or pitching to clients—while living their best tropical life.

Looks like “Work from Home” just got a serious upgrade.
