ROS Guts Out Gritty Win Over Converge To Grab Solo PBA Philippine Cup Lead

Rain or Shine didn’t have its shooting touch, but it didn’t matter — effort carried the Elasto Painters to a hard-fought 90-84 win over Converge on Sunday at the Ynares Center in Montalban, pushing them to the top of the PBA Philippine Cup standings at 7-2.
Guard Gian Mamuyac embodied ROS’ never-say-die attitude, making big plays on both ends of the floor as the Elasto Painters clawed back from a 14-point hole. His energy helped ROS steal a game they trailed for most of the night.
“It’s pure effort,” coach Yeng Guiao said after the win, which dropped the FiberXers into a tie for third with Magnolia and NLEX at 6-3. San Miguel slipped to solo second at 6-2.
Guiao admitted the team struggled heavily with their shooting.
“We’re shooting badly actually. We had lots of open looks, di namin maipasok. Masama rin ang free throws. Trabaho lang talaga,” he said. He added that foul trouble on Converge’s bigs — plus Justin Arana being sidelined due to a previous injury — gave ROS a big break.
Even without Arana, the FiberXers controlled much of the game. Juan Gomez de Liano put up 20 points and nine rebounds, Larry Muyang added 18 and nine, while Justine Baltazar dominated the glass with 21 rebounds.
Converge even held the lead entering the fourth quarter, but ROS refused to fold. Mamuyac came up huge in winning time — locking down Gomez de Liano, hitting key shots, including a cold-blooded three that pushed ROS ahead 90-81 with under two minutes left.
“It started with the kickout from Caelan Tiongson. It was the right play, at mabuti na-shoot,” Mamuyac said. “Converge was still in it at may momentum pa sila. Buti na-shoot.”
Mamuyac finished with 15 points, six rebounds, and three assists, capping a statement performance.
Mike Malonzo chipped in a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards, while Larry Santillan led ROS with 16 points.
Rain or Shine may not have shot well, but on a night powered by grit, hustle, and heart, that was more than enough to stay on top.
