Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) President Al Panlilio expressed his satisfaction after meeting naturalization prospect Bennie Boatwright on Saturday, April 20, at Fairways Grill, Manila Golf and Country Club in Makati.

Alongside national coach Tim Cone, Panlilio had a relaxed lunch with Boatwright, discussing his character and potential contribution to Gilas Pilipinas. Panlilio conveyed his positive impressions to SBP officials, indicating that Boatwright may be the right fit for the team.

Boatwright, a 6-foot-10 forward weighing 235 lbs, recently arrived from China, where he played in the Chinese Basketball Association. He is being considered as a future naturalized player for Gilas Pilipinas, following in the footsteps of Justin Brownlee. Despite Boatwright's recent arrival, discussions regarding his potential role in the team have already begun.

Excited about the prospect of representing the Philippines, Boatwright expressed his eagerness to contribute to Gilas Pilipinas' journey, particularly aiming towards the FIBA World Cup Qualifiers and the possibility of participating in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Boatwright, who previously played college basketball at the University of Southern California and has professional experience in various leagues, including the PBA, sees joining Gilas Pilipinas as a natural and exciting opportunity.

During their meeting, Boatwright was briefed on the naturalization process and expressed his willingness to follow the necessary procedures, including appearances before government committees. SBP officials are currently coordinating with Boatwright to finalize his schedule, reflecting his eagerness to join the team.

Boatwright's swift acceptance and enthusiasm to represent the Philippines highlight the growing interest of foreign players in contributing to the country's basketball program. With his potential addition, Gilas Pilipinas aims to strengthen its roster for upcoming international competitions, including the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Latvia.
