It’s official—Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is that guy.

The Oklahoma City Thunder star has been named the 2024-25 Kia NBA Most Valuable Player, taking home the Michael Jordan Trophy and making history in the process. This is the first MVP win for SGA, who’s been steadily climbing the ranks of NBA superstardom. After finishing second in voting last season and fifth the year before that, his time has finally come—and he earned every bit of it.

Let’s break it down:

Gilgeous-Alexander averaged 32.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, 6.4 assists, 1.72 steals, and 1.01 blocks over 76 games. Those are absurd numbers, and they’re all career highs in scoring, assists, and blocks. He also shot 51.9% from the field, 37.5% from three, and nearly 90% from the free-throw line. Efficiency, volume, and impact? Check, check, and check.

And here’s the kicker—SGA became the first player since James Harden in 2018-19 to lead the league in 20-, 30-, 40-, and 50-point games all in the same season. He dropped 20 or more in 75 of 76 games, with his lone “off night” being an 18-point outing against San Antonio way back in October. After that? He went on a 72-game streak of scoring at least 20 points—something we haven’t seen since the Wilt Chamberlain and Oscar Robertson days in the ‘60s.

Talk about consistency.

Gilgeous-Alexander also made major strides defensively. He was the only NBA player to average at least 1.5 steals and 1.0 blocks per game, anchoring a Thunder defense that finished No. 1 in the league in defensive rating.

Need more historic context? SGA joins Michael Jordan as the only players in NBA history to average at least 32 points and 6 assists per game while shooting 50% or better from the field in a season. Yes, that Michael Jordan. The trophy’s namesake.

This win also marks a milestone for Canadian basketball—Shai is now the second Canadian-born player to win MVP, joining Steve Nash. And he’s now in elite Thunder company, becoming just the third player to ever win MVP with OKC, alongside Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook.

With the Thunder finishing 68-14, tying for the sixth-best record in NBA history and setting a league record for point differential (+12.9 per game), it’s clear Shai’s dominance translated into wins. OKC didn’t just win—they ran over teams, and Gilgeous-Alexander was the engine behind it all.

From All-Star to All-NBA, from Player of the Month to All-Tournament Team honors in the NBA Cup, Shai’s trophy case is officially overflowing. But this MVP? This is the crown jewel.

And with the way he's playing, it might not be his last.

Thunder fans, Canada, and hoop heads everywhere—Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has arrived.
