Weather conditions across parts of the Visayas and Mindanao are starting to turn unsettled as a low pressure area east of Mindanao has intensified into Tropical Depression Ada, PAGASA said Wednesday.

As of 10:00 a.m., the center of Tropical Depression Ada was spotted about 635 kilometers east of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, packing maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 55 kilometers per hour. The system is moving northwestward at 35 kilometers per hour, with strong winds extending as far as 500 kilometers from its center.

Because of this, Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 has been raised over several areas, warning residents of strong winds that may pose minimal to minor risks to life and property. These areas include Northern Samar, Samar, and Eastern Samar in the Visayas, as well as Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, and Surigao del Sur in Mindanao. PAGASA noted that the strongest wind signal Ada may reach during its passage is Signal No. 2.

Aside from winds, heavy rainfall is also a concern. PAGASA advised the public to refer to Weather Advisory No. 1 for detailed rainfall forecasts, as downpours linked to Ada could affect several regions, especially those already prone to flooding and landslides.

Strong to gale-force gusts are also expected due to the combined effects of the northeast monsoon and Ada’s outer circulation. Today, these conditions may affect areas such as Batanes, the Babuyan Islands, Ilocos Norte, parts of Cagayan and Isabela, Aurora, most of Quezon, and several provinces in Bicol. By Wednesday, strong winds may expand over CALABARZON, parts of Mimaropa, the Bicol Region, and Central Visayas, before covering most of the Visayas and parts of Caraga by Friday.

Coastal waters are expected to turn rough as well. PAGASA warned of waves reaching up to four meters along several eastern and northern seaboards, including parts of Ilocos Norte, Camarines Norte, Catanduanes, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Albay, Sorsogon, and the Dinagat Islands. Smaller vessels, especially motorbancas, are strongly advised not to venture out to sea under these conditions. Moderate seas are also expected in other coastal areas, where mariners are urged to take extra precautions.

Looking ahead, PAGASA said Ada is likely to strengthen into a tropical storm within the next 24 hours as it continues to move west-northwestward to northwestward. On its current track, Ada may pass close to or make landfall over Eastern Visayas on Friday or early Saturday, then over Catanduanes between Saturday and Sunday, before turning northeastward over the waters east of Luzon.

With these developments, authorities are urging communities and local disaster offices to stay alert and take necessary steps to protect lives and property. Residents in hazard-prone areas are advised to closely follow instructions from local officials and continue monitoring weather updates from PAGASA.
