FILE
The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has confirmed the deaths of two Filipino seafarers during a recent attack by Houthi rebels on ships navigating the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.

Expressing profound sorrow, the DMW extends heartfelt condolences to the grieving families and loved ones of the fallen seafarers, whose identities are being withheld to respect their privacy.

Additionally, two other Filipino crew members sustained severe injuries in the attack, and the DMW earnestly prays for their swift recovery.

In response to this tragedy, the DMW, under the guidance of the President, is providing unwavering support and assistance to the bereaved families. The department is in close coordination with the ship's manning agency and owner to determine the well-being of the remaining crew, particularly the Filipino members, who have reportedly reached a safe port.

Efforts are underway to repatriate the remaining Filipino crew members, with the DMW collaborating closely with the principal shipowner and manning agency.

The department calls upon shipowners navigating the turbulent Red Sea-Gulf of Aden sea lanes to adhere strictly to the expanded "high-risk areas" designation and implement robust risk mitigation measures, including rerouting vessels and deploying armed security personnel.
