U.S. Visa Applicants Asked To Make Social Media Accounts Public For Security Screening

In a step aimed at enhancing the visa vetting process, individuals applying for F, M, or J nonimmigrant visas to the United States are now being asked to set their social media accounts to “public.” This change, which takes effect immediately, is intended to support the identification and screening process used to determine whether an applicant meets the legal requirements for entry into the United States.
F, M, and J visas are commonly used by international students, vocational trainees, and exchange visitors. While applicants have been required since 2019 to submit their social media identifiers on visa application forms, this new request goes a step further by encouraging public visibility of that information.
According to U.S. authorities, social media content plays a role in assessing visa eligibility and identifying potential security concerns. Making profiles publicly viewable is expected to streamline this process by providing clearer access to online activity that could be relevant to determining admissibility.
The U.S. government emphasizes that visa screening draws on all available information, and this latest measure is intended to strengthen its ability to identify individuals who may pose a threat to national security. While not legally mandated, compliance with the request to set accounts to public may influence the pace and outcome of individual visa applications.
Prospective travelers are encouraged to review the content they share online and to ensure that their digital presence aligns with the information they provide in their applications.
