Upholding Accountability: NCRPO Arrests Seven Police Officers Over Robbery-Extortion And Graft Charges

In line with the Philippine National Police’s core pillar of accountability, the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO), under the resolute leadership of PMGEN Anthony A. Aberin, has taken decisive action against misconduct within the ranks. On the evening of June 30, seven uniformed personnel assigned to the Manila Police District (MPD) were arrested for their alleged involvement in robbery-extortion, grave threats, arbitrary detention, and violations of both the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act (RA 3019) and the law against obstruction of justice (PD 1829).
The operation, which took place around 11:00 PM at Police Station 5 in Ermita, Manila, was executed by joint elements of the Regional Intelligence Division (RID) and MPD. The swift action followed a formal complaint filed earlier that day by a private citizen, triggering a prompt investigation and intelligence validation.
Those arrested were all part of the Station 5 Anti-Drug Unit and included one Police Lieutenant, three Staff Sergeants, and three Patrolmen. According to the initial findings, the complainant—a 49-year-old man—was unlawfully arrested on June 20 on fabricated drug charges. While in custody, officers allegedly demanded ₱50,000 from his spouse in exchange for his release. Although only ₱20,000 was transferred via mobile payment, the complainant was eventually freed without charges. Upon learning that a formal complaint had been filed, the officers reportedly attempted to return the money to dissuade legal proceedings—an act that only further validated the allegations against them.
During the arrest, authorities recovered seven mobile phones believed to have been used in the extortion scheme, five official police IDs, screenshots of digital conversations, and remittance records related to the extorted amount.
“This operation is a clear demonstration of our unwavering commitment to police accountability,” said PMGEN Aberin. “It reflects our determination to immediately act on credible reports of misconduct and to cleanse our ranks of individuals who tarnish the image of our organization.”
The arrested officers are now under restrictive custody, and formal charges are being prepared. NCRPO leadership reiterated that this incident underscores their dedication to the Chief PNP’s leadership framework under PGEN Nicolas D. Torre III—particularly in delivering swift, just, and responsible policing.
“Let this serve as a warning,” PMGEN Aberin added. “There will be no second chances for those who betray their oath. We will not allow the actions of a few to stain the dedication and service of the many who serve with integrity. Those who violate the law will be arrested, detained, and removed from service—always in accordance with due process.”
This case marks another critical step in the PNP’s ongoing internal cleansing efforts and sends a strong message: accountability is not optional—it is expected, enforced, and indispensable.
