Verbena Nears Caraga, Brings Wide Swath Of Rains And Strong Winds

Tropical Depression Verbena is inching closer to the Caraga Region, holding its strength as it moves westward and threatens to bring rain, rough seas, and strong winds across large parts of the country.

As of 10 a.m., Verbena’s center was spotted about 205 km east-southeast of Surigao City. It’s still packing maximum sustained winds of 45 km/h and gusts of up to 55 km/h while moving west at 15 km/h. Its winds stretch up to 200 km from the center — wide enough to affect regions far from its track.

Wind Signals Up in Several Areas

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 remains hoisted over dozens of provinces across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, warning the public to expect strong winds within 36 hours. The threat ranges from minimal to minor damage, but winds could feel stronger in coastal and mountainous areas.

Luzon areas under Signal No. 1 include parts of Mindoro, Palawan, Romblon, Masbate, and surrounding island groups.
The Visayas coverage spans Antique, Aklan, Iloilo, Cebu, Bohol, Leyte, Samar provinces, and Negros provinces.
Mindanao areas include Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, northern Surigao del Sur, parts of Agusan provinces, Camiguin, and portions of Misamis Oriental.

Heavy Rains and Winds Expected

PAGASA warns that Verbena will bring periods of heavy rainfall, enhanced by the shear line and amihan. Localized thunderstorms and strong winds remain possible even outside the typhoon’s track, and many areas not under Signal No. 1 may still experience gusty conditions due to the surge of the Northeast Monsoon.

On top of this, gale-force winds continue over the northern seaboard of Northern Luzon. Sea travel remains risky, especially for small boats and motorbancas, as waves could reach up to 4.5 meters in some areas.

Most northern and eastern coastlines — from Batanes down to Dinagat Islands — are dealing with rough to very rough seas. PAGASA strongly advises fishermen and small vessels to stay in port.

Where Verbena Is Headed

Verbena is expected to move west-northwest and make landfall in Caraga this afternoon or evening. From there, it will cross the Visayas and northern Palawan between tonight and Tuesday evening before exiting toward the West Philippine Sea by Wednesday morning.

While it may slightly intensify before landfall, Verbena is likely to remain a tropical depression as it crosses land. It could reach tropical storm category once it emerges over the sea and may peak as a severe tropical storm while over the West Philippine Sea.

Public Safety First

PAGASA reminds local governments and residents — especially those in flood- and landslide-prone communities — to take precautions and be ready to evacuate if necessary. Weather conditions may shift quickly, and hazards are possible even outside Verbena’s direct path.
