MANILA, Philippines — Vice Ganda made history at the 51st Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) Gabi ng Parangal, winning Best Actor in a Leading Role for their performance in Call Me Mother. This is widely celebrated as a milestone for LGBTQ+ representation in Philippine cinema.
The awards night, held on December 27 at Dusit Thani in Makati City, was filled with emotion as Vice took the stage, radiating pride and gratitude.
In Call Me Mother, Vice portrays an adoptive mother navigating love, identity, and family — a performance that has earned praise for its heart and depth.
Onstage, Vice dedicated the award to “all mothers,” including their own, their sisters, partner Ion Perez, and friends in the entertainment industry, while also highlighting the importance of inclusivity in film. Media coverage reported that Vice spoke about queer representation, emphasizing that LGBTQ+ performers can achieve the highest honors in Philippine cinema.
The film also received several other awards, including Third Best Picture (shared with Manila’s Finest), the Gender Sensitivity Award, and Best Child Performer for Lucas Andalio.
MMFF 2025 showcased not only outstanding talent but also a growing acceptance of diverse voices on the big screen. Vice Ganda’s historic win signals a significant step forward for representation and storytelling in Filipino films.
