Vice President Sara Duterte personally visited the victims of the Binaliw landfill landslide at VisMed Hospital in Cebu City, offering comfort to injured workers and listening to their painful stories of survival.
The victims told the Vice President that many of their co-workers remain missing after being buried by tons of garbage when the landslide struck. They also shared that two of their companions did not survive the tragedy.
Following the hospital visit, authorities confirmed the growing scale of the disaster. Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival Sr. reported that eight people have been confirmed dead, while 28 others are still missing. At least 12 survivors are currently recovering in hospital as search and rescue operations continue at the landfill site.
All those affected were working at the landfill at the time of the incident. Survivors recounted different and harrowing experiences of how they escaped, with some managing to run for safety while others were rescued by fellow workers amid the chaos.
Vice President Duterte extended her deepest sympathies to the families and colleagues of those who lost their lives, urging them to remain strong during this difficult time. She also called on Filipinos to stand together, emphasizing love for the country, for fellow citizens, and for every Filipino family as the nation responds to the tragedy.
Rescue teams continue to comb through the landfill, hoping to locate those still missing and bring closure to grieving families.
