'What's Ours Is Ours!' - Bong Go Urges Filipinos To Stand Firm In Defending The West Philippine Sea

Senator Bong Go isn’t mincing words when it comes to the West Philippine Sea: “What is ours is ours!” he declared, emphasizing that it’s time for the country to stay vigilant and assertive in protecting its territory — especially with rising tensions near Sandy Cay in the Spratly Islands.
In a passionate statement, Go reminded everyone that this isn’t just about claiming land or sea. “Hindi lang ito usapin ng teritoryo. Buhay at kabuhayan ng mga mangingisda natin ang nakataya dito,” he said, standing firmly in defense of Filipino fisherfolk whose daily lives are directly affected by any instability in the region.
Recent Chinese activity in Sandy Cay — including a reported symbolic landing by the China Coast Guard — raised fresh concerns. But Philippine officials were quick to counter the claims, confirming that the area remains under Philippine monitoring and control. Still, Go believes Filipinos must not let their guard down.
“Every time tensions rise in the WPS, it’s the ordinary fisherfolk who suffer the most,” Go said. “Imagine being afraid to go out to sea, not knowing if you’ll come home with a catch — or if you’ll come home at all.”
The senator urged peaceful, diplomatic resolutions, but made it clear that the Philippines must continue asserting its sovereign rights under international law. He warned that ignoring these provocations could eventually hurt the nation’s food security, economy, and national morale.
Beyond words, Go is pushing action. He filed Senate Bill No. 2112, or the Philippine Coast Guard Modernization Bill, which aims to give the PCG better tools — advanced vessels, aircraft, and equipment — to protect not only our waters from threats like smuggling and terrorism but also to respond effectively to typhoons and other disasters.
“Our coast guard is out there, protecting lives and livelihoods. It’s only right that we strengthen them,” he said.
Go is also calling on government agencies to step up support for fisherfolk affected by maritime tensions — from safety measures at sea to livelihood assistance when they can’t fish due to conflict.
“At the end of the day, it’s about making sure no Filipino goes hungry,” Go said. “Habang ipinaglalaban natin ang atin, siguraduhin din nating protektado ang kabuhayan at kapayapaan ng ating mga kababayan.”
His message? Defend with dignity, protect with purpose — and never lose sight of the ordinary Filipino in the fight for what’s rightfully ours.
