Eleven people lost their lives in a tragic road crash in Barangay Libod, Camalig, Albay on Wednesday, after a UV Express van collided with a 10-wheeler truck and plunged into a creek.

According to Camalig Mayor Carlos Irwin Baldo, only one of the 12 passengers on the Nabua–Legazpi van survived. Rescuers worked for eight hours to pull victims from the wreckage.

Initial investigation shows the truck suffered brake failure, slamming straight into the van before it fell into the creek.

The truck driver, whose vehicle bore plate number RFK 576, survived the crash. His helper also lived but is currently hospitalized.

Nabua Mayor Fernando Simbulan, reacting on social media, said the tragedy has left their town devastated.

“This is a heartbreaking tragedy for our municipality,” he wrote. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families now facing unimaginable loss.”

He also noted that authorities are still working to identify some of the victims, as several were found without IDs. Simbulan assured that the local government is ready to assist the affected families however needed.

LTO Steps In

The Land Transportation Office–Bicol has issued a show-cause order to the truck driver and the vehicle’s registered owner. They have 10 days to explain why they should not be held liable for reckless driving and for operating a vehicle with defective parts.

The driver’s license has been suspended for 90-days and he has been ordered to surrender his physical license. The truck has also been placed under alarm status and can’t be operated unless it passes a valid motor vehicle inspection.

As investigators continue piecing together what happened, both communities and officials are rallying around the victims’ families—and calling for accountability to prevent another tragedy like this.
