Super Typhoon Uwan left massive damage and forced more than 1.4 million Filipinos to flee their homes over the weekend as it pummeled large parts of the country, according to the Office of Civil Defense (OCD).

In a video briefing Monday, OCD Deputy Administrator Bernardo Rafaelito Alejandro IV said the evacuees — roughly 426,000 families — were moved to safety ahead of the typhoon’s landfall. The figure was based on data gathered by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).

“These preemptive evacuations covered nearly all major regions — from the Ilocos Region and Cagayan Valley, down to Central Luzon, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA, and even as far as the Visayas,” Alejandro shared.

The Bicol Region recorded the highest number of evacuees, followed by Eastern Visayas and CALABARZON.

6,000 Evacuation Centers, 1,000 Houses Damaged

Around 6,000 evacuation centers are currently open, sheltering about 318,000 individuals (92,000 families).

Meanwhile, the OCD is validating reports of two fatalities — one from Viga, Catanduanes, who drowned, and another from Catbalogan City, Samar, who was struck by a collapsed structure. Two others have reportedly been injured.

“We are still validating the casualties,” Alejandro clarified. “Damage assessment for infrastructure and agriculture is ongoing.”

Early estimates place the number of houses damaged by Uwan at around 1,000.

Damage Assessment Ongoing

Government agencies continue to assess the extent of destruction across Luzon and Visayas as Uwan moves away from the Philippine landmass. Officials have emphasized that the early evacuation efforts helped prevent more casualties despite the storm’s widespread impact.
