The devastation left by Super Typhoon Uwan continues to unfold, with the reported death toll now at 33 and more than seven million Filipinos affected. Many families are still cramped inside evacuation centers, trying to regain some sense of normalcy.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said Wednesday that only one of the 33 reported fatalities — from Region 9 in the Zamboanga Peninsula — has been officially confirmed so far. The rest are still being verified: 20 in the Cordillera Administrative Region, seven in Bicol, three in Central Luzon, and one each in Western and Eastern Visayas.
Just days earlier, the agency’s count was at 28.
According to the NDRRMC, Uwan’s path cut across 14,854 barangays in 16 regions, affecting a staggering 7.5 million people — or more than 2.1 million families.
As of Wednesday morning, 80,720 families are still inside 3,169 evacuation centers, while more than 118,000 others are staying with relatives, friends, or in makeshift shelters.
The cyclone’s brute force also left massive destruction in its wake: 271,023 homes damaged and 25,764 completely destroyed across 14 regions.
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has ordered nonstop relief and rehabilitation operations, directing all government agencies to remain on full alert and to prioritize communities hit hardest by the super typhoon.
