What started as questions over failed flood control projects has now turned into a full-blown legal storm.

At a year-end press briefing, Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon revealed that 87 individuals have been recommended for serious charges, including plunder, malversation, graft, and bribery, over their alleged involvement in the controversial flood control scandal.

The list of those implicated reads like a who’s who of Philippine politics. Among the names mentioned are former House Speaker Martin Romualdez, Senators Jinggoy Estrada and Joel Villanueva, resigned Rep. Zaldy Co, along with several current and former government officials.

Dizon said authorities have already begun acting on the recommendations. Nine people have been arrested, while 23 others are now facing cases in court, signaling that the crackdown is no longer just on paper.

With more names under scrutiny and cases moving forward, the flood control controversy is shaping up to be one of the biggest accountability tests for the government—one that many Filipinos will be watching closely as the year comes to a close.
