Semarang, Indonesia — A Cahaya Trans bus carrying 34 passengers overturned early Monday morning on the Krapyak Toll Road in Semarang, leaving 16 people dead and 17 others injured.

The bus, traveling from Jatiasih, Jakarta to Yogyakarta, reportedly lost control while negotiating a curve, hit a road barrier, and rolled over. Authorities are still investigating the exact cause of the accident.

Rescue teams from Basarnas Semarang, on special standby for the Christmas and New Year holiday, rushed to the scene along with personnel from the police, Jasa Marga, PMI, and other emergency responders.

Evacuation was difficult as some passengers were trapped inside the overturned bus and broken glass blocked access. Rescue teams carefully cleared paths to extract victims. By around 4:00 a.m., all injured passengers were transported to nearby hospitals, including RSP Kariyadi, RS Columbia Asia, and RSUD dr. Adhyatma.

Authorities have reminded drivers to stay alert, take breaks when tired, and maintain a safe distance, especially during the holiday season, to prevent accidents on busy roads.
