The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former Undersecretary Maria Catalina Cabral, extending its condolences to her family and asking the public to respect their privacy as they grieve.

In a statement, the DPWH said Cabral served the department for more than 40 years and that her loss will be deeply felt across the organization.

Authorities earlier retrieved Cabral’s body on Friday, December 19, near Kennon Road in Tuba, Benguet. Police said she was found unresponsive around 20 to 30 meters below the highway near the Bued River.

Based on police reports, Cabral had been traveling with her driver toward La Union when she asked to be dropped off in the Camp 5 area of Kennon Road. When she could no longer be located, the driver reported her disappearance, prompting a search operation.

Cabral was later found by responders, and a scene-of-the-crime operation was conducted. Authorities said the investigation is ongoing and further updates will be released as available.
