Magbanua Stands Ground: PCG Confronts Chinese Ship Near Bajo De Masinloc

The BRP Teresa Magbanua is standing firm in the West Philippine Sea, issuing repeated radio challenges to a China Coast Guard vessel spotted well inside the Philippines’ maritime zone.

According to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), CCG vessel 4305 has been lingering 42.77 nautical miles southeast of Bajo de Masinloc and 103.15 nautical miles southwest of Capones Island, Zambales. In response, the PCG’s flagship multi-role response vessel has maintained a strong presence in the area.

Acting under the directive of PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan — and in line with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s policy — BRP Teresa Magbanua continues to assert the country’s maritime rights through firm, clear radio challenges. The PCG tells the Chinese vessel that its presence is illegal and violates the 2016 Arbitral Award, UNCLOS, and the Philippine Maritime Zones Act.

These confrontational but rules-based challenges highlight the Philippines’ determination to defend its sovereign rights within its exclusive economic zone, as upheld by the arbitral ruling that invalidated China’s sweeping maritime claims.

The persistent presence of BRP Teresa Magbanua also serves another purpose: reassuring Filipino fishermen that the government has their back. With the PCG nearby, local fishing crews can operate without fear of intimidation or interference.

Through continuous patrols and professional radio challenges, the PCG is carrying out the President’s directive — to enforce maritime law, safeguard national sovereignty, and help keep the peace in the West Philippine Sea without escalating tensions.
