Just in time for the holiday season, 179 low-income households in Manila are now enjoying safe and reliable electricity, thanks to the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) and its corporate social responsibility arm, One Meralco Foundation (OMF).
A special lighting ceremony was held with Meralco and OMF leaders, together with local government officials, to celebrate the families’ newly energized homes under OMF’s Household Electrification Program (HEP).
“The city of Manila continues its commitment to ensure that every household, street, family has access to safe, reliable, and sustainable electricity. This electrification program is more than just installing power lines. It is about improving the quality of life of our residents. By energizing our barangays, we are empowering families and building a brighter future for our community,” said Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko” Moreno Domagoso, represented at the event by Manila City Administrator Atty. Eduardo P. Quintos XIV.
The program benefits residents of Barangays 581, 254, 107, and 649 Baseco Compound (Port Area), who previously relied on neighbors’ electricity through submetering.
OMF, together with Meralco’s España-Tutuban and Malate Business Centers and the Manila Sector, partnered with the City Government of Manila to bring HEP to these households, providing them with legal and reliable electricity connections.
“Meralco and One Meralco Foundation will continue working closely with local government units to bring light and opportunity to more Filipinos. For us in Meralco, HEP is an investment for the future. Beyond providing electricity, it is about strengthening families, empowering communities, and supporting inclusive sustainable development and nation-building,” said Meralco Senior Vice President, Chief Revenue Officer, and OMF Trustee Ferdinand O. Geluz.
OMF President Jeffrey O. Tarayao added, “The spirit of bayanihan and our commitment to partnership with the national and local governments have brought not only light but also opportunities to these families in Manila this Christmas season. This effort underscores our commitment to our mission of ensuring that no Filipino family will be left in the dark and that they will become more productive members of their own communities.”
With this initiative, these Manileños now have safer, more affordable electricity that opens doors to opportunities, improved productivity, and a brighter start to the new year.
