President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney have affirmed their shared commitment to deepen cooperation between the Philippines and Canada, particularly in the areas of trade, defense, and regional security.

In a Facebook post on Friday, President Marcos described his phone conversation with Carney as very good, highlighting their mutual desire to build a stronger partnership for the benefit of both nations and their citizens.

“We discussed how our two nations can further strengthen and deepen cooperation in trade, defense, and maintaining peace in our region,” Marcos said.

A statement from Carney’s office echoed this sentiment, noting that the two leaders also spoke about the longstanding economic and cultural ties between their countries. Carney underscored opportunities to expand investment and commerce, particularly by advancing free trade, and emphasized Canada’s support for a “free and open Indo-Pacific” and a rules-based international order.

The Filipino community in Canada — now numbering nearly 1 million, according to Statistics Canada — represents the third-largest ethnic group in the country, after Indian and Chinese communities. This enduring connection was also reflected in their discussion of Canada’s response to the recent tragedy at the Lapu-Lapu Day Block Party in Vancouver, where a vehicle plowed into a crowd, leaving 11 dead and many injured. Marcos expressed his gratitude for Canada’s swift support for the Filipino-Canadian community in the aftermath of the incident.

Carney extended an invitation for Marcos to visit Canada, with both leaders agreeing to keep the lines of communication open as they continue to pursue closer cooperation.

Currently, the two countries are negotiating a free trade agreement to expand bilateral trade, investment, and sectoral collaboration. Trade between the Philippines and Canada has been steadily growing, reaching USD 3.4 billion in 2023, up from USD 3.1 billion in 2022. Canadian foreign direct investment in the Philippines totaled USD 983 million in 2021.

As both nations work to strengthen ties, their leaders underscored a shared vision: a deeper partnership that supports economic growth, cultural connection, and peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
