MANILA — With millions of devotees expected to flock to Quiapo for the Feast of Jesus Nazareno on January 9, 2026, Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has stepped up preparations to help ensure public safety during the annual Traslacion.
Personnel from the power distributor conducted wire-clearing operations along Arlegui Street on January 7, removing sagging and low-hanging cables that could pose risks to devotees during the procession. Meralco also inspected utility poles and power lines along the Traslacion route as part of broader safety checks ahead of the major religious event.
The company said the effort was carried out in close coordination with the Manila local government as well as telecommunications and cable service providers, highlighting the importance of inter-agency cooperation during large-scale gatherings.
“Meralco worked closely with the Manila local government unit and telco and cable service providers to conduct these operations in line with our efforts to put utmost importance to public safety,” said Meralco Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications Joe R. Zaldarriaga.
Wire-clearing activities are part of Meralco’s regular safety program across its franchise area, especially ahead of major events that draw large crowds. The company said these efforts aim to support a safe, peaceful, and orderly Traslacion while continuing to deliver reliable and stable electricity service to millions of customers.
