Laiya, San Juan, Batangas got a big dose of community care after Meralco’s CATropa team and Landco Pacific Corporation rolled out a two-day free spay, neuter, and anti-rabies drive for local pets and community animals.
From November 18 to 19, Club Laiya turned into a lively animal welfare hub as 250 cats and dogs from Barangay Laiya Aplaya and nearby areas received free procedures and vaccinations. The event was backed by the San Juan local government and Biyaya Animal Care.
The initiative is part of Meralco’s ongoing Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return (TNVR) program, which usually focuses on animals found within Meralco facilities. This time, the company expanded its efforts after several Laiya resorts reported a rise in stray animals, raising concerns about guest safety and rabies risks.
Jhem Fauni-Azarcon, Project Director and Head of Community Development at Landco, said the collaboration aims to help Laiya maintain a safe and welcoming environment for residents and tourists: “By managing the animal population responsibly and working closely with our partners, we’re building long-term solutions that protect both animals and the community.”
Provincial Agriculturist Rodrigo Bautista expressed full support: “This helps reduce rabies cases, and the community’s involvement is key. Working together is the only way to build a healthy environment.”
To strengthen the program’s impact, Biyaya Animal Care also held a special training session on the flank spay method, enabling provincial veterinarians to take a more active role in solving local animal overpopulation.
Pet owners and volunteers enjoyed small treats, thanks to Maxime and UNAHCO–Yumyum Dog Food, which provided giveaways to participants.
Meralco Chief CSR Officer and OMF President Jeffrey Tarayao said the initiative reflects the company’s commitment to people and animals alike: “Caring for animals is caring for the community. Every life matters, and every effort counts.”
Meralco Vice President for Corporate Communications Joe Zaldarriaga added that animal welfare remains a core part of how the company contributes to safer, more compassionate neighborhoods.
Since launching its campaign in 2024, Meralco’s TNVR and community welfare efforts have already supported over 670 animals, showing its growing commitment to humane and sustainable community programs.
