Meralco Lowers December Rates; Gives Holiday Boost To Households

Just in time for the holiday season, Meralco is giving Filipino households some welcome relief. The Manila Electric Company announced a reduction of P0.3557 per kilowatt-hour in electricity rates for December, translating to roughly P71 in savings for a typical household consuming 200 kWh.
“For our residential customers with a typical consumption of 200 kWh, this translates to a decrease of around P71 in their total electricity bill this month,” said Meralco Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications Joe R. Zaldarriaga. “With the holiday season approaching, we hope this rate adjustment gives much-needed relief for our customer.”
The new rate brings the overall price for a typical household down to P13.1145 per kWh from the previous month’s P13.4702 per kWh. While the decrease is good news, some components of the bill—like Power Supply Agreements (PSAs) and the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) charges—rose slightly due to scheduled maintenance and adjustments in November.
Meralco explained that IPP, PSA, and WESM sources accounted for 21%, 73%, and 6% of total energy requirements, respectively. Meanwhile, taxes and other charges dropped by P0.0737 per kWh. The company’s distribution charge has remained unchanged since a reduction in August 2022.
Alongside the rate update, Meralco reminded the public to observe holiday electrical safety to avoid accidents during the season. Tips include unplugging Christmas lights when not in use, inspecting lights for damage, using proper hangers, avoiding “octopus” connections, and keeping a fire extinguisher ready.
“As we enter the season of festivities, we remind all our customers to continue practicing electrical safety to avoid any possible untoward incident. Our crews remain on standby 24/7 to respond to concerns on electricity service,” Zaldarriaga added.
With the lower rates and safety reminders, Meralco aims to help families enjoy a bright and worry-free holiday season.
