No More Rain-Soaked Walks: Covered Walkway To Soon Link SM North And Trinoma

Commuters and shoppers who regularly pass between SM North EDSA and Trinoma may soon enjoy a safer and more comfortable walk. The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has committed to building a covered walkway connecting the two malls, addressing long-standing complaints about flooding and exposure to the elements.
Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez said the move was ordered by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who wants pedestrian safety and convenience prioritized, especially during the busy holiday season.
“We saw the actual condition of the walkway between the two malls, and it’s really difficult for passengers,” Lopez said. “When it rains, the area even gets flooded. That’s why we will put a roof over the walkway to ease the burden on commuters.”
The planned structure is also expected to eventually connect to the Common Station, allowing seamless access to MRT-3, LRT-1, and MRT-7. Both the Common Station and MRT-7 are targeted to become operational in 2027.
While waiting for the permanent covered walkway, MRT-3 has already inspected the area and installed temporary cement slabs in flood-prone sections to make the path safer during heavy rains.
The DOTr and MRT-3 are now closely coordinating with mall operators to fast-track construction.
“This is something we are closely monitoring. Commuters should not have to endure this kind of experience for long,” Lopez said.
Once completed, the covered walkway is expected to significantly improve daily travel for thousands of passengers moving between two of Metro Manila’s busiest transport and commercial hubs.
