A group of Filipino seafarers who had been held in Yemen following the July attack on the cargo ship Eternity C has been released after successful mediation led by the Sultanate of Oman.

The crew — composed of several nationalities, including Filipinos — was transported on Wednesday from Sana’a to Muscat after Omani officials coordinated with multiple parties to secure their freedom.

The Eternity C, a Greek-operated vessel, was attacked in the Red Sea by Houthi rebels using drones and explosive-laden boats. The assault caused major damage and eventually led to the ship sinking, prompting an international rescue and negotiation effort to recover and free the surviving crew members.

Philippine officials welcomed the release and expressed relief that the Filipino seafarers were safely transferred out of Yemen.

Labor Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac thanked the Omani government for its assistance, noting that sustained diplomatic efforts played a crucial role in ensuring the safe handover of the Filipino crew.

India also acknowledged Oman’s help in securing the release of its own national. Indian Ambassador to Oman G. V. Srinivas expressed gratitude to the Sultanate for its “tireless efforts” and coordination.

The Philippine government continues to monitor the situation in the region, stressing the need for heightened safety measures for Filipino seafarers navigating high-risk maritime zones.
