MANILA, Philippines — Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla is pushing back against allegations made by former Rep. Zaldy Co, calling the ex-lawmaker’s claims linking President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to the budget controversy “illogical.”

“Illogical kasi ‘yon… It’s a President’s budget, we prepared it prior to giving it to Congress — why would you now do something like that?” Remulla said, reacting to Co’s accusations that the President played a role in the alleged anomalies.

Remulla confirmed that his office is now reviewing the names Co mentioned in his video series, but stressed that the investigation cannot move forward unless Co formally swears to his statements.

He also questioned Co’s explanation for remaining abroad, strongly rejecting any suggestion of threats to the former lawmaker’s safety.

“Kalokohan ‘yon!” Remulla said.

Despite his criticisms, the Ombudsman assured that Co will be protected if he decides to return to the Philippines. Remulla added that if a warrant of arrest is eventually issued, authorities would have no difficulty bringing Co back.

“Kung mayroon siyang kinatatakutan — sabihin niya, matutulungan namin siya. We do not want everybody to be gone. Siyempre, sa amin ibibintang kung may nangyari — diba kanino ibibintang yan?” he said.
