On July 1, 2025, Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra was officially suspended from her duties by the Constitutional Court, following the emergence of a controversial audio clip involving a phone conversation with Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen. The Court’s decision to suspend her is pending its full consideration of the case.
Shortly after the ruling, Paetongtarn issued a composed and resolute statement, saying, “I humbly accept the Court's decision.” She acknowledged the Court's authority and confirmed that she will step back from all official duties during this period.
“I will cease performing my duties, and I have 15 days to submit a clarification,” she said, referring to the legal timeframe granted to respond to the allegations.
In the statement, Paetongtarn addressed the content of the leaked audio, which has stirred debate over its implications for national security and diplomacy. “I will do my utmost to express my true intentions,” she emphasized, “that the leaked audio clip reflects nothing but wholehearted dedication to the nation.”
She further clarified her position, stating that her communication was guided solely by the intent to protect Thailand’s sovereignty and ensure the safety of the country’s armed forces. “My aim has always been to protect our sovereignty and safeguard the lives of our armed forces and every soldier who serves this country,” she said.
The suspension marks a significant moment in Thai politics, placing the country’s leadership in a temporary state of uncertainty as the Constitutional Court proceeds with its investigation. Paetongtarn, however, maintains that her actions have always been in service of the nation, and she now prepares to present her defense in the coming days.
