Pickup Driver Banned For 90 Days Over Dangerous Road Violations

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has suspended for 90 days the driver’s license of a pickup truck driver who was caught counterflowing and driving without a seatbelt on a public road, putting the lives of other motorists at risk.

The suspension follows President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive to hold abusive and irresponsible drivers accountable for blatant traffic violations that endanger public safety.

Transportation Secretary Giovanni Lopez stressed that there is no room on Philippine roads for reckless drivers whose actions threaten other road users.

“Mariing utos ng Pangulo na dapat sumunod sa batas trapiko. Kapag abusado kayong driver at pati ibang kababayan natin ay malalagay sa peligro, mananagot kayo at pwede naming kanselahin ang lisensya nyo,” Lopez said.

A video circulating online showed a Toyota Hilux driving against oncoming traffic while the driver was not wearing a seatbelt, prompting swift action from authorities.

In a Show Cause Order issued by the LTO, both the registered owner of the vehicle and the still-unidentified driver were ordered to explain the violations committed. The driver faces multiple charges, including reckless driving, disregarding traffic signs, violation of the mandatory use of seatbelts, and operating a motor vehicle without proper qualifications.

Authorities said the driver’s license could be permanently revoked depending on the outcome of the investigation. The LTO has also placed the involved vehicle under alarm while the case is being reviewed.

The agency reiterated its warning that motorists who ignore traffic laws and endanger others will face strict penalties as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to promote road safety and discipline on public roads.
