Samsung Electronics has taken another major step in shaping the future of smart homes, announcing that its SmartThings platform now supports Matter 1.5, making it the first in the industry to enable Matter-compatible cameras.
With the update rolling out later this month, SmartThings will expand its existing lineup of Matter-supported devices—such as lights, door locks, switches, and sensors—to now include cameras. This move positions SmartThings as the smart home platform with the broadest support for Matter devices to date.
“Samsung aims to ensure that products and services built on different brands and protocols deliver a unified experience through SmartThings,” said Jaeyeon Jung, Executive Vice President and Head of SmartThings Team at Samsung Electronics. “We will continue to expand our support for industry standards, including Matter, and further strengthen collaboration to drive new customer experiences.”
Matter 1.5, introduced by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) in November, marks a significant upgrade to the global smart home standard. In addition to camera support, the update enhances features for closures such as blinds, awnings, and garage doors, while also improving energy management capabilities.
The addition of camera support is seen as a major milestone for the industry, as cameras play a critical role in modern smart homes. Matter 1.5 supports a wide range of camera applications, including indoor and outdoor security cameras and video doorbells. Key features include live video streaming, two-way audio, motion detection, event history, and pan-tilt-zoom controls.
For manufacturers and developers, the update simplifies integration. Camera makers can now release Matter-based cameras that work seamlessly with SmartThings without needing to build separate APIs. Samsung said it has already collaborated with global IoT brands such as Aqara, Eve, and Ulticam, with Matter-compatible cameras expected to launch starting March 2026.
SmartThings already works with major camera brands like Aqara, Arlo, Hue, and Ring across different protocols. The addition of Matter cameras further expands user choice and makes it easier to build a connected home experience within a single platform.
For consumers, the integration means greater convenience and peace of mind. SmartThings users can monitor their homes remotely, check on pets, receive alerts, and create customized routines that connect cameras with other smart devices like doorbells and sensors.
Samsung said SmartThings’ continued growth is driven by its open-platform approach. Through the Works With SmartThings certification program, the platform now supports over 4,700 device models from more than 390 partner brands. By rapidly adopting Matter, Samsung has helped bring 58 Matter device types into everyday use, reinforcing its leadership in the smart home ecosystem.
