After a heartbreaking opening loss, the San Miguel Beermen answered with grit and cohesion in Game 2 of the PBA Philippine Cup Finals, overpowering TNT Tropang Giga, 98–92, Wednesday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
This time, there was no controversy—just a dominant, disciplined performance from the Beermen, who evened the best-of-seven series at one game apiece. Don Trollano shone brightest with 22 points, including a decisive fourth-quarter surge that sealed the win.
The two storied franchises return to the Big Dome on Friday for Game 3 with the series finely balanced and everything to play for.
San Miguel came out determined to make up for its narrow 96–99 defeat in the series opener. Trollano led the charge, but he had plenty of help: June Mar Fajardo contributed 17 points while Moala Tautuaa added 16, as the Beermen punished TNT inside and capitalized on key Tropang Giga miscues down the stretch.
Throughout the game, San Miguel displayed sharp teamwork and efficient execution, both offensively and defensively, to frustrate the Tropang Giga. They dominated the paint, outscoring TNT 38–8 inside in the first half alone, and committed just two turnovers over that span—leading to a lopsided 15–0 edge in points off turnovers.
At halftime, the Beermen held a 51–39 advantage, buoyed by the steady play of Fajardo, Trollano, and Jeron Teng. Teng sparked a second-quarter run that saw SMB build a lead as large as 13.
But TNT refused to fold easily. Calvin Oftana stepped up with a team-high 23 points, and the Tropang Giga roared back in the third quarter, sinking six three-pointers to close the gap to just one, 74–75, heading into the final period. They even tied the game at 77 before San Miguel regained control.
The turning point came midway through the fourth when Trollano strung together seven straight points, punctuated by a clutch three-pointer, to push the Beermen ahead 92–82 and effectively snuff out TNT’s rally.
Even in defeat, TNT showed resilience despite battling injuries. RR Pogoy, who hurt his ankle early, played nearly 25 minutes but couldn’t replicate his Game 1 heroics, while Poy Erram left with a swollen ankle late in the game. Still, the Tropang Giga left the court with heads held high, knowing they were in it until the very end.
The series now moves into a crucial third game with momentum back on San Miguel’s side—but if Game 2 is any indication, both teams have plenty more fight left in this championship clash.
