Fifteen Filipino seafarers being held by Iranian forces are safe and unharmed, according to the Department of Migrant Workers, which also assured that their families have been informed and are receiving support.

DMW Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac said the Filipinos were onboard two container ships—Epaminondas and MSC Francesca—that were intercepted by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps while attempting to exit the Strait of Hormuz on April 22.

Ten of the seafarers were on Epaminondas, while five were on MSC Francesca. Both vessels are now near the Iranian coastline.

“We have been assured that all 15 seafarers are safe and unharmed,” Cacdac said, noting that the agency remains in close coordination with the crew’s families, the manning agencies, and the shipowners to provide continuous updates and assistance.

The DMW added it is taking all necessary steps to protect the welfare of the affected Filipinos while working with relevant stakeholders amid the situation.

The incident comes amid rising tensions in the region, following earlier reports of vessel interceptions since late February. The government, under Ferdinand Marcos Jr., reiterated that ensuring the safety of overseas Filipino workers remains a top priority.
